    • Decent Bargain for an Electric

By TN Leaf on Friday, June 21, 2019

      4.0
I've had this car for a year now, mostly using it for my short 17 mile commute to work. With 156 miles of range, I can charge a little more than once per week. My SV came loaded with navigation, pro-pilot assist, lane departure, self-adjusting cruise control, etc. But really you don't need those fancy features because you don't have enough range for interstate trips. The biggest complaint is no telescoping steering wheel, I'm 6 feet tall and it's very hard to get a comfortable position. Also the back seat is too tight for my upcoming teenage boys. This is a great 2nd or 3rd car, not good as a primary. Maybe soon the ranges will increase to 300+ and then all the interstate gadgets will actually come in handy.
    • Typical Nissan boring, but cheap to run

I've had my Leaf SV Plus since new for six months. I was determined to go pure electric and an experience with Brand T left me convinced to never buy another car from them. No other BEV met the Leaf's specs. First, the good: it's stupid cheap to run, especially since Nissan provides two years of No Charge To Charge service for 50kW, 30 minutes at a shot (sufficient to bring the battery from 20-ish to 75-ish percent). If you have rooftop solar and a NEMA 14-50 outlet at home, you can finish the final 20 percent at home for pennies. I get 4.4kWh/mile with Ecodrive turned on; with the 62kWh battery, that's a solid 260 miles of range as long as you take it easy. One-pedal driving works well but needs an occasional dab on the brakes. Adaptive cruise is reasonably competent. And that's about it. The bad: an annoying spool-up whine on acceleration. Armrests are way too low and the seat position is way too high. The steering wheel tilts but doesn't telescope. The rear seats don't fold flush with the cargo area. The recessed handle to pull down the hatch is extremely awkward. The rear-view camera glitches at random. The infotainment system reboots at random. And the price: $42K. Considering the mediocre build quality and lack of active battery cooling, that's absurd. OK, I drive it for basically free, but come on. Knock $10K off the price and it would be more in the ballpark. In sum: 4/10, do not recommend.
    • 2020, a long term winner to other electric cars

      By scott-l on Wednesday, August 26, 2020

I've owned the Model 3, Model X, and Teslas. I've even owned Prius, Volvo electric phevs, adn if you talk about range, talk about, quality, all of them lead me to saying the 2020 Leaf SL Plus surpasses them. With the model 3 you're looking a range of 220, but with the leaf you get even more than that. Prior to 2019, ranges were terrible in the 60's ranges today. The Leaf Plus gives you 226 + on range, and you never have to deal with terrible Servicing from the Tesla side, long waits, short staffing, rental car shortages, and misled repair quotes, it's a fiasco with Tesla even in 2020. The Nissan route is unpopular today, but it really is a quality feel. I rated 4 stars to performance only because the tires are lower traction than is needed at initial revs, but past 20 miles per hour they stick extremely well when flooring it. Bi-directional charging is also a huge plus for home-backup solutions.

*Additional costs include accessories that you add, sales tax, tag and title fees for the state in which the vehicle will be registered, freight (as applicable) and a dealer processing fee applicable in the state in which the dealer is located ($500 Maryland; not required by law); ($394 Pennsylvania); ($799 Virginia & North Carolina).
