Hybrid Vehicles Explained
With a hybrid vehicle, you’ll see the smallest amount of disruption to your daily routine. They still have the internal combustion engine that you’ll find in gasoline-powered vehicles, but with the addition of an electric motor. It uses the electricity from the electric motor to help start the vehicle and to drive at low speeds, reducing your emissions and improving on fuel costs, though you will never get an all-electric range from a standard hybrid vehicle.
Plug-In Hybrid Vehicle
A PHEV, or plug-in hybrid vehicle, is another type of hybrid model, combining both the internal combustion engine and the electric motor and battery configuration. The difference between a PHEV and a traditional hybrid is that PHEVs have larger batteries, which means they need to be charged. The larger batteries do mean greater electric driving capability, and PHEVs typically have an all-electric range of up to 20-50 miles.
Electric Vehicles
The final option for lower impact models is electric vehicles, or EVs, which have no internal combustion engine at all. Instead, they drive completely on the power from the electric motor and battery, which reduces emissions and significantly lowers power costs. When preparing to purchase and EV, you will need to consider how and when you’re going to be able to charge it, as that can take longer than filling up a gasoline vehicle.
